Job Description

Northvolt has an exciting job offer for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our stellar Data & AI department in Stockholm.

As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer within the Data & AI department, you will use your expertise and experience to consume large amounts of heterogenous data from our batteries, factories and R&D facilities to build ML/AI products that solve important problems, drive data driven decision making from automation to human in the loop and lead discovery of insights. We strive to use technology and data to co-develop ML/AI solutions that matter, and welcome applicants from diverse experience levels and backgrounds.

We are searching for someone seasoned and passionate about using using machine learning to solve a wide variety of problems. The ideal candidate is a curious life-long learner who takes ownership and is eager to collaborate to build better ML/AI products. You enjoy communicating and empathizing with people in diverse professional roles, cultural backgrounds, and experience levels in data-driven approaches. This role is a vital member of the Data & AI department within R&D and is key to Northvolt's mission to enable the future of energy.

In this role, you will have the awesome opportunity to:

  • Hone your already seasoned ML Engineering skills in develop, evaluate, deploy and monitor state of the art algorithms in production (Example: Build defect detection models for vision inspection systems that run on edge on the factory floor, GenAI models, ensemble models for regression/classification to deep learning/NN)
  • Apply software engineering to build efficient and scalable solutions that are deployed in a critical production setting (Example: Writing high quality, reusable code and components) utilizing our established MLOps pattern. As senior ML Engineer you are also expected to continuously drive the evolution our MLOps pattern together with the MLOps Platform team.
  • Continuously stay relevant as Senior ML Engineer by keeping up to date with latest research and best practices within machine learning and sharing your knowledge as senior ML engineer with your colleagues such as Data Scientist, ML Engineers, Data Engineers etc. (Example: Read and implement papers on relevant topics and discuss your learnings)
  • Innovate and use a data-driven approach to solve unique and potentially unsolvable problems that require more than off-the-shelf algorithms (Example: Consume tremendous amounts of heterogenous data from the manufacturing process to solve the problem of predicting which battery cells will have quality issues.)

Skills & Requirements

Preferred experience:

  • ML Engineering: Building machine learning models (from traditional to computer vision and GenAI) and deployment of production grade pipelines and inference endpoints - driving the MLOps pattern development, applying it and lead colleagues in using it. Seasoned skills in deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow/PyTorch/Etc. as well as traditional ML in Sckitlearn/Statsmodels, etc. Coding skills are mostly Python, SQL, IaC etc. Experience with Databricks is meriting. Essentially have a track record of running scalable MLOps patterns and successful deployment of large variation of Machine Learning models and architectures in production

  • Software engineering: Version control, unix shell, testing, CI/CD (in accordance with our DevOps/MLOps pattern, Github exprience is meriting). Cloud computing skills are a must (AWS experience is meriting).

  • Communication, communication, communication. You communicate fluently and humbly with all types of different humans choosing effective methods based on context, audience and purpose.

Not required (but bonus points):

  • [Bonus] Experience in GenAI and RAG concepts using for instance LangChain, LangGraph & LangSmith as well as fine tuning LLM:s (using PEFT-, PPO/Reward Model techniques for instance) and working with vector embeddings in for instance Pinecone.
  • [Bonus] Kubernetes/Serverless infrastructure orchestration
  • [Bonus] Academic publications within machine learning related fields
  • [Bonus] Manufacture industry and/or battery technology experience
