Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer to join us in our mission to contribute to a greener future. The role is a part of our passionate Fleet team based in Stockholm. In this role, you will be responsible to deliver monitoring, traceability and control for all machines in our factories. Your software will run on our edge gateways, which are the link between the PLCs that control the machines and the cloud. It runs 24x7 on our fleet of thousands of devices across the world and enables Northvolt to make better batteries.

The data we collect monitors and drives our production process and provides a live report on how every cell is manufactured. To make this happen, you will work with the control engineers, suppliers and other cross-functional teams to understand how the machine is built and run, what its software interface looks like and how to get the data we need. Then you design, write, test and deploy an application to collect the data and integrate the machine into our production process.

Part of that process is to manage the software that runs on our fleet of edge devices. This requires to deliver software and OS updates to thousands of edge gateways remotely, reliably, securely and at scale. For this, we have built a custom fleet management system and Linux distribution that you and the team continuously improve.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable Industrial IoT infrastructure
• Design, develop, and maintain applications to extract data from industrial equipment on the factory floor (most of it is written in Go)
• Work closely with cross-functional software engineering and industrial automation teams
• Work on-call as required

Skills & Requirements

We believe that you have :

• Programming skills in at least one language (ideally Go or Python) and desire to learn more
• Some basic understanding of algorithms, data structures, concurrency, distributed systems and eventual consistency but you don’t have to be an expert
• Passion, curiosity and willingness to learn on the job and we will teach you what you need to know
• Knowledge of modern cloud technologies (AWS, GCP or Azure) and infrastructure as code (ideally Terraform)
• Knowledge of virtualisation, containerisation, Kubernetes and related technologies
• Good communication skills, ability to Get Stuff Done, and a learning mindset
• Qualities that we cherish are flexibility, sense of quality, friendliness, motivation to take on new challenges, grit and a sense of humor.
• You are comfortable to challenge the status quo since we don’t have all the answers either.

Bonus points for:

• IoT experience (Azure IoT, AWS IoT and similar)
• Knowledge of Linux kernel, device drivers, and bootloader configuration
• Experience in scripting languages such as Bash and Python
• Experience working with the Yocto Project
