Process Engineer – Laser Technology

Ingenieurwesen
  • Applications are considered on a rolling basis
  • On-site

Job Description

About the role We are seeking a hands-on, team-oriented engineer to drive the discovery, development, and optimization of laser technologies for Northvolt’s battery manufacturing processes. You will focus on designing laser strategies that unlock transformative improvements in throughput, cost and quality, and validating them on the pilot-scale. Mental flexibility and collaborative problem-solving abilities are required. The ideal candidate will have comprehensive range of technical know-how, a versatile cooperative skill set, and a resilient passion to bring new technologies to market.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Help define laser technology projects (welding, cutting, patterning, etc.) that help Northvolt achieve its next-generation factory KPIs (performance, cost, footprint, throughput etc.)
  • Design and execute experiments including mechanical design, fixturing, optical setup, sensing, calibration, process optimization and data analysis
  • Define technical specifications and evaluate supplier manufacturing capabilities for technology need
  • Ensure deliverables and timelines for projects are met and work with colleagues in our Manufacturing Engineering Team to ensure that technologies are seamlessly transferred to industrialisation
  • Mentor engineers and scientists by providing technical insight, offering brainstorming, and assisting with problem solving
  • Work with our Advanced Materials and Cell Development teams to drive driving mechanistic understanding of process vs. cell vs. material design correlations

Northvolt is an equal opportunity employer. We're a diverse group of individuals, united by a common mission, who recognise that while our actions as individuals have a role to play in driving Northvolt towards its goals, we always seek to move forward as a team. We offer you an open and welcoming atmosphere where we win as a team – and fail as a team. Northvolt is growing at the speed of light and we are a strong believer in internal career development. For us it’s important to look at your skills and potential, please refrain form including your picture and age with your application to help us with this.

Apply with CV in English or your complete LinkedIn profile.

Full time employment, fixed salary.

Skills & Requirements

We believe that you have:

  • 10 years experience (fewer for candidates with an advanced degree) in process design and engineering preferably with extensive experience in laser manufacturing technologies (welding, cutting, patterning, etc.) related integration, parameter optimization, and safety procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to drive step function improvements in process design, cost savings, yield, quality, resource management, and space utilization
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a wide array of personalities and stakeholders, driving alignment, prioritization, and progress in rapidly changing situations
  • Knowledge of process and equipment development processes including quality standards, PFMEA, design of experiments and statistical analysis, Lean tools (six sigma, RCA, 5S etc.), health and environmental safety
  • At least a B.S. in engineering or physical sciences (i.e. Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing engineering, or Chemistry, Physics)

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with fixture/clamping design concepts for laser welding processes
  • Experience with Robot Manipulation / Kinematics (ABB, Kuka, Fanuc, etc.)
  • Experience with laser welding monitoring systems for quality control
  • Experience with battery material selection, cell design, electrode processing, cell assembly, testing, and failure mode analysis, preferably within a lithium-ion battery manufacturing organization.
  • Experience with computer programming and/or machine learning

About the company

Northvolt makes green batteries for a blue planet. Affordable cells and high-quality battery systems. All manufactured with a record-low carbon footprint. Purposely built to provide Europe with the opportunity to switch to renewable energy – efficiently and entirely.

To accomplish this, we do things differently. We design, manufacture, and recycle everything under one roof. We even build our own factories. All this is incredibly challenging and requires us to think in unconventional ways. We’re constantly experimenting, learning and adapting to make batteries so great – they will one day make oil history.

Northvolt is growing fast. We’re staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We're also hiring for our gigafactory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden. We want to work with smart individuals from all disciplines. Strong individuals that truly want to make a positive impact on the future. Those of us already on board share a passion for our mission. We’re prepared to work hard in pursuit of excellence. We enjoy the ride and our main drive is to make a difference for real. As a team, we’re dedicated to thinking new, working hard and having fun.
