(Senior) Backend Engineer & Chapter Lead (m/f/d) - Offering

Join us as a (Senior) Backend Engineer & Chapter Lead (m/f/d) in our Offering team on a shared journey that matters!

As a Chapter Lead, you balance dual roles. On the one hand, you engage hands-on with the day-to-day technical tasks of your team's product development, collaborating with your peers and the tech lead of your team to follow the roadmap and address new stories from the team backlog. On the other hand, you take responsibility for the growth and development of individuals outside your team—your chapter members (chaptees). You act as a confidant, coach and mentor for your chaptees and facilitate their growth through active listening and empathetic behaviour. You perform administrative people management tasks and support your chapter members in their career journeys.

About the Offering Team

The Offering team is responsible for providing our users with an intuitive and quick booking experience. The team owns the app screens from origin and destination selection to selecting and ordering an offer. The team is motivated by converting as many users as possible from opening the app to ordering a trip which they achieve by constantly iterating and A/B-testing new features or UX improvements. Next to the app parts, they operate backend (micro)services as a middle layer between our MOIA-internal APIs and the app to keep them slim and lightweight with the complexity handled in the backend. 

What you will do

  • Provide an outstanding customer experience: Together with the other developers of your team, you will contribute to a one-of-a-kind app which provides a smooth and friction-free experience to our customers.
  • Lead with Servant Leadership: Guide and inspire engineers using a servant leadership approach. By fostering a supportive and empowering environment, you will enable the overall career development of your chaptees.
  • Proactively balance your hats: As Chapter Lead, you enjoy balancing your hats and setting clear expectations. You will spend 20% to 50% of your time on very empathetic people leadership tasks – changing over time and depending on the overall demands and projects in the larger organisation.
  • Focus on people: As a Chapter Lead, your primary focus will be less on enhancing your team’s technical skills and more on fostering their career development, personal growth, and overall well-being through disciplinary people management.
  • Performance Focus: In collaboration with other roles, you will be responsible for fair and unbiased salaries across your chapter based on past performance.
  • Be a role model: You represent the core values and principles of MOIA in people leadership as much as product delivery in the team. As a chapter lead in MOIA, you rise by lifting others.
  • Culture Development: Together with the other Chapter Leads, you will play an active role in shaping and nurturing the MOIA tech culture, ensuring it remains innovative and inclusive.
  • Assure Quality: Ensure the systems owned by your team meet the highest quality standards, including code reviews, testing, and validation processes across team boundaries.
  • Breathing “agile”: You are a role model following core agile working methodologies in the team: you know DevOps best practices by heart, are familiar with automated testing, infrastructure as code, continuous deployment and production observability.

What will help you to fulfill your role 

  • With your customer-centric mindset, you drive the team’s contribution within their value stream. 
  • You have experience with or a strong interest in developing software in Scala and/or in functional programming in any other JVM language. Bonus if you know your way around Kubernetes on AWS.
  • You know how to apply best practices with a high standard of quality while also being pragmatic on when your implementation is “good enough”.
  • You have experience in leading people and taking care of their career growth.
  • You have previous experience in attracting and retaining talent.
  • You are aware of the dynamics in organisational development.
  • Feedback in general and specific in pairing and code review is important for you.
  • You know how to navigate and resolve conflicts both for yourself as well as for others.
