Job Description

As a Process Engineer, you hold the responsibility for one or more manufacturing processes—spanning from analysis to setup, development to the execution of mass production technology decisions.

Your expertise in manufacturing technology is crucial for analysing the manufacturing science behind our products. In this role, you will actively contribute to mass production technology decisions based on detailed technical studies including Design of Experiments (DoE).

Collaboration with cross-functional teams at Northvolt and technology partners is an integral aspect of this role. The position is situated in Västeras, at our research and development center.

This role positions you at the core of state-of-the-art cell manufacturing—specifically in process technology. We are actively seeking experts in laser welding, ultrasonic welding, mechanical forming, cutting, winding, stacking, or similar processes.

Skills & Requirements

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan and execute hands-on technical work using statistical techniques, including Design of Experiments (DoE) and Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Develop and fine-tune process parameters (Bill of Process) throughout all product phases—from the first sample to mass production—considering product and quality requirements, process stability/cpk, and manufacturing & product cost
  • Collaborate closely with technology partners, involving onsite technical work, including DoEs
  • Define the process design, process flow diagram, P-FMEA, defined CTQs (critical to quality characteristics), analyze manufacturing risks, and develop mitigations
  • Provide cell design feedback based on process DoE's and technical analysis
  • Offer day-to-day hands-on process and equipment support for manufacturing existing products, as well as transitioning new products and processes into manufacturing
  • Make process technology recommendations for mass production based on DoEs and data evidence
  • Engage in rapid prototyping of jigs, fixtures, test setups, etc.

Skills & Requirements:

  • BSc or MSc degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Material, or Chemical engineering.
  • 4+ years of relevant work experience in laser welding, ultrasonic welding, joining, mechanical forming, stacking, winding, battery production, or similar fields.
  • Experience in R&D or high-volume battery production, electronic, or semiconductor industry.
  • Proficiency in the development of Design of Experiments (DoE), scientific work, and Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Proven track record of successfully leading process development and process improvement projects.
  • Possess a curious, hands-on approach, technical education, and a strong problem-solving background.
  • Very good knowledge of English.

About the company

Northvolt makes green batteries for a blue planet. Affordable cells and high-quality battery systems. All manufactured with a record-low carbon footprint. Purposely built to provide Europe with the opportunity to switch to renewable energy – efficiently and entirely.

To accomplish this, we do things differently. We design, manufacture, and recycle everything under one roof. We even build our own factories. All this is incredibly challenging and requires us to think in unconventional ways. We’re constantly experimenting, learning and adapting to make batteries so great – they will one day make oil history.

Northvolt is growing fast. We’re staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We're also hiring for our gigafactory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden. We want to work with smart individuals from all disciplines. Strong individuals that truly want to make a positive impact on the future. Those of us already on board share a passion for our mission. We’re prepared to work hard in pursuit of excellence. We enjoy the ride and our main drive is to make a difference for real. As a team, we’re dedicated to thinking new, working hard and having fun.
