Senior Backend Engineer – Flexibility & Green Energy Platform

Our Flexibility team is building the next generation of tools that make energy cheaper, greener and smarter for millions of customers.

The role
As a Senior Backend Engineer you will design, build and scale services that:

• Automate smart charging for 300 k+ EV drivers (Intelligent Octopus)
• Deliver money-saving “Saving Sessions” and free-electricity events to 2 million households
• Balance the national grid by controlling 568 MW of large-scale battery storage
• Enable switching to heat-pumps, solar and other green tech in seconds

We work in small, autonomous squads with flat hierarchies, continuous deployment and weekly releases. Ownership is real: you will ship to production on day one and see the carbon and cost savings your code creates.

What you’ll bring

• 5+ years backend development, ideally Python/Django
• Strong micro-service and distributed-system design skills
• Experience with PostgreSQL or similar RDBMS at scale
• Cloud know-how (AWS, GCP or Azure) and infrastructure-as-code mind-set
• Passion for clean code, testing and observability
• Interest in decarbonising energy and mentoring junior engineers
